Chapel The wooden chapel came from the farm “Hagleithof” in Kirchberg. It is decorated with holy images and has a small altar. Death announcement cards of Association members hang on the walls. These cards with pictures of the deceased are positioned here on the one hand to help us to remember, on the other hand to ensure them a place next to God. Piety and religion were an essential part of a farmer’s character. The holy duty to fulfill the third commandment and not work on Sundays and Holy Days was taken very seriously. In the chapel, thanks were given for a good harvest but the farmers also prayed for support from “above”. Some women prayed and lit candles hoping to be blessed with children. Apparently after the arrival of the 8th or 9th child they then desperately tried to blow out these candles! The Catholic religion played a major role in the Tyrolean people’s lives. Children followed their parents into religion and all members of the household regularly visited church and prayed together. The farm calendar was determined by religious events such as Easter, Har- vest Festival, Corpus Christi and Christmas. Christmas and the nativity scenes brought the children a welcome change from everyday life, a lot of pleasure and also a little present! 34
