Downstairs Bedroom As previously mentioned, the downstairs bedroom was where the old or retired farmer and his wife slept after their son or daughter had taken over the running of the farm. This contained a double bed, a cupboard, a chest of drawers and a glass cabinet. This was used to store inherited or bought keepsakes and jewellery - a few modest pieces collected over a lifetime of hard labour. They lived here until their deaths so many farmers lived on one farm for their entire lives. Larger farms would have a separate house or cottage where the retired farmers lived. 18
